In 1864, the U.S. Mint stopped using nickel in the production of Indian Head pennies and changed to a bronze composition, consisting of 95 percent copper and 5 percent tin and zinc. These 1904 proof pennies sell for $1,275 in choice condition. Chief Engraver of the United States Mint James B. Longacre designed the 1904 Indian Head penny. Serving as the Chief Engraver from 1844 until his death in 1869, he designed not only Indian Head pennies, but several other coins as well, including the two-cent piece.
