LONDON, February 28, 2011 —FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, today unveiled a new Boeing 777F aircraft at its Stansted facility as part of the next evolution of FedEx Express sustainability efforts in reducing its global footprint. Boeing says formation flight tests conducted with FedEx Express using two 777F freighters confirm the potential for reducing fuel consumption by up to 10% by flying in the wingtip vortex of the. Mar 28, 2012 COLOGNE, March 28, 2012 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. (NYSE: FDX) and the world’s largest express transportation company, has today introduced a Boeing 777F (B777F) at Cologne Bonn Airport. The ultra-modern aircraft will connect Cologne to the main FedEx Express hub in Memphis, Tennessee, USA, four times a week. FedEx originally ordered 15 of the new widebody freighter jets back in November 2006, with options to buy 15 more. The newly announced deal converts those options to a firm order, and adds options.

Boeing handed FedEx the keys to a shiny new 777 Freighter today, the box hauler’s first of 15 on order. In 2006, FedEx placed what is still the largest 777F order to date, soon after canceling their A380F order due to the Airbus program’s chronic delays.

Following FedEx’s tradition of naming each of their planes after the child of a FedEx employee, the new 777, registered N850FD, has been dubbed “Saad.” Saad is the only son of Kashif Zia, an auditor at FedEx’s Newark hub.

According to Boeing, the new twin jets offer significant range and payload advantages over the MD-11s they will eventually supplant from the FedEx fleet:

In the FedEx Express operation, the 777 Freighter can fly 5,800 nautical miles (6,675 statute miles, 10,740 km), an increase of 2,100 nautical miles (2,410 statute miles, 3,890 km) versus the airline’s MD-11 Freighter fleet. The FedEx 777 Freighter has a revenue payload capacity of 215,000 pounds (97.5 metric tons), a 37,000-pound (16.7-metric-ton) increase over the MD-11 Freighter.

Unfortunately for New York spotters, the new Boeings will be reserved for long-haul flights linking key Asian manufacturing centers to FedEx’s Memphis hub. And Anchorage is out of luck, too: Unlike the MD-11s, the 777F’s increased range means no Alaskan fuel stops before and after their long hops across the Pacific.

FedEx Introduces Boeing 777F in Cologne

COLOGNE, March 28, 2012 – FedEx Express, a subsidiary of FedEx Corp. FedEx Express previously operated the route using an MD-11 aircraft.
Despite carrying seven tons more freight, the B777F uses less fuel and is able to fly almost 3,900 kilometers further than the MD-11, which is typically used for long-haul routes. The B777F also emits 18 percent less CO2 emissions and is much quieter in operation. As a result, the aircraft offers FedEx Express greater flexibility in its services and network while also benefitting it customers and communities.
“Our overall objective is to transport parcels and freight shipments reliably and as quickly as necessary in the most environmentally friendly way possible,” said Antje Schütt-Fahrenkrog, regional vice president, Operations, Central/Eastern Europe and Israel, FedEx Express. “To achieve this, we make use of innovative technologies across-the-board which we, as a global and responsible company, have often helped to develop. Here in Cologne, we are proud that one of the most modern and fuel-efficient aircraft in our fleet is now serving the airport. We are also thrilled that the largest solar energy system at any FedEx Express site in the world can be found on the roof of our hub.”
“The deployment of the FedEx B777F in Cologne is a good move—both for the environment as well as the communities around the airport”, said Michael Garvens, chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “It’s also great news that FedEx Express has become the first company flying to Cologne with a B777F on a regular basis.”
